The conservation of Jan Wyck’s painting, The Battle of the Boyne (1693), is the first major off-site conservation project being carried out by the National Gallery of Ireland, in collaboration with Malahide Castle and Gardens. This historic and impressive painting (219 x 302 cm) was bequeathed to the National Gallery in 1936 and has been on loan to Malahide Castle since 1976. Over the coming months the NGI Conservation Department will carry out full-scale conservation work in situ, and visitors to Malahide Castle will have the opportunity to view aspects of conservation work in progress.

As part of the preparations involved in the project, National Gallery conservators are researching the painting’s history and are working on materials analyses in conjunction with the Centre for Microscopy and Analysis at Trinity College Dublin to investigate the pigments and painting methods used by Jan Wyck.

Speaking at the launch, Sean Rainbird, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, said: “The National Gallery of Ireland is delighted to have gained substantial support from the William Connor Foundation and a grant from The Heritage Council to undertake a major conservation treatment on one of the Gallery’s most important historical paintings. Following completion of the project, the painting will return to the Gallery for a period and will be one of the key works in our 2016 exhibition, Creating History: Stories of Ireland in Art, before retaking its place in the historically significant surroundings of Malahide Castle, where it has been on show for many years. We look forward to working with our partners, and also invite members of the public to see conservation work in action during their visits to the Castle in the coming months.”

The Gallery’s website pages on the project will go live on March 4th 2015, and will feature information about the painting, the artist, Jan Wyck and on the historical event. There will be a section on the conservation process and a selection of artworks related to the Battle of the Boyne. There will also be a weekly blog and podcasts by the conservators to enrich the online visitor experience.

The Battle of the Boyne conservation project is made possible by a grant from The William E. Connor Foundation. The Gallery also acknowledges the assistance of the Ireland Funds of China, and a grant by The Heritage Council under the Heritage Management Grant Scheme 2014.
