Job Title: Conservation Housekeeper
Reports to: Curator & Collections Manager
Starting Salary: €29,000
Contract Type: Full-time Permanent with Flexible hours to suit sites

Job Description:
Malahide Castle & Gardens and Newbridge House & Farm are two vibrant and multifaceted visitor attractions at the heart of Fingal County Council’s Heritage Properties portfolio. Expecting to welcome a combined total of over 300,000 visitors in 2023 the two historic sites aim to deliver the highest standards of housekeeping, collections care, conservation standard and customer care. Both distinct and varied in their own way the collections are valued and important heritage assets for the people of Fingal that we must preserve, conserve and best present. The role is a full-time position. The successful candidate will be expected to be flexible and be able to divide their work across sites as and when needed within hours suitable to the sites operations.

Outline of Role:

Collections Care:
Following an appropriate collections care regime for Malahide Castle and Newbridge House in line with current heritage housekeeping best practice. Such practice includes, but are not limited to:
• Daily housekeeping and Conservation cleaning of the collections and rooms as per schedule;
• Deep (planned and ad-hoc) cleaning
• Assisting with monitoring of the condition of the collections both through routine, informal checking and formal record keeping;
• Reporting any concerns, damage or loss to the Curator & Collections Manager;
• Assisting with environmental monitoring and integrated pest monitoring and control measures;
• Assisting with the administration in support of care of the collection and housekeeping, for example by packing collection items to be sent to specialist conservators using appropriate materials and maintaining relevant object movement records by following Curatorial procedures;
• Undertaking Collections Care, Manual Handling and other such necessary training
• Assisting with use of the property for functions and events by ensuring security and safety of collections by safe handling, packing and moving as necessary.

General Housekeeping:
Undertaking the routine cleaning and housekeeping of display areas of the sites, including but not limited to:
• Vacuuming, sweeping, polishing of floors
• Dusting/polishing of fittings such as panelling, stairs, and doors
• Dusting/wiping of sills, skirting’s, door-frames, and window frames
• Dusting/wiping furniture and objects
• Polishing metal fittings and objects
• Cleaning of windows

Supporting the use of the property for functions and events by:
o Protecting vulnerable collections;
o Assisting with functions furniture set-up and striking;
o Clearing and cleaning before and after the event.

Scope of role
• Will work closely with the Curator & Collections and other Fingal Heritage colleagues.
• Will work closely with contractors working on site and suppliers.
• Will have daily interaction with members of the public of all ages and abilities.
• Flexible hours will apply due to the nature of the business with out of hours required during high season in Malahide Castle.
• Occasionally you will be required to work at other sites including but not limited to Casino Model Railway Museum.

Essential Requirements:

• Experience working in the museum sector, historic property or tourism industry
• The ability to work as part of a team and independently
• Willingness and ability to learn and gain new skills
• Competency in handling artworks and historical objects

Desirable Experience:
• Experience as a Housekeeping Assistant/Collections Care Assistant (or similar) in a castle/country-house or museum.
• Previous housekeeping experience including cleaning and presentation of areas open to the public.

Job Title: Curatorial Assistant
Reports to: Curator & Collections Manager
Starting Salary: €29,000
Contract Type: Full-time Permanent with Flexible hours to suit sites

Job Description:
Malahide Castle & Gardens and Newbridge House & Farm are two vibrant and multifaceted visitor attractions at the heart of Fingal County Council’s Heritage Properties portfolio. Expecting to welcome a combined total of over 300,000 visitors in 2023 the two historic sites aim to present the best level of historical research and interpretation of their histories and collections to an ever widening and growing demographic of visitors. Both distinct and varied in their own way the collections are valued and important heritage assets for the people of Fingal to understand and interpret the past. The intention of growing the curatorial team is to expand in areas of collection management, deliver an exciting programme of exhibitions and develop strategy and policies to safeguard and define the future role of the heritage collections in Fingal. The role is a full-time position, 40 hours a week, for an initial period of a 12-month contract. The successful candidate will be expected to be flexible and be able to divide their work
across the two sites as and when needed. You will be encouraged to bring new ideas to the team, particularly in how we present and interpret our collections and you will be encouraged to grow in the role and develop new skills and knowledge.

Outline of Role:
● Assist the Curator in interpretation, planning and creating displays, installing exhibitions, and ongoing curation projects.
● Assist the curator and house team on various projects including but not limited to:
– Cataloguing collections and updating inventory
– Object condition reporting
– Writing Museum and collections policies
– Coordinating conservation projects
● Assist the curator and house team in conservation of the collection, cleaning of the house, and all areas of preventative  conservation.
● Undertake research of the collection, house, and family history and prepare reports, briefs, and interpretative script. Particularly to support research in priority areas of interpretation of Fingal’s collections including but not limited to, diversity, new acquisitions, and wider Fingal-affiliated research projects.
● Assist the curator in office administration, contacting contractors, suppliers, artists, conservators, lenders, and other partners. Including management loans and records management
● Help out in all manner of visitor experience and customer service to ensure visitors have the best possible experience. This also includes communications with staff internally and with public partners externally, working with Marketing and Communications team, and answering queries from the public on the collection.
● Deliver tours of the house and talks on collection and relevant histories as and when required in an efficient, informative, and courteous way to ensure a dynamic, and layered quality visitor experience.
● Ensuring safety of collections and security of the site as a part of the house team.
● To work with fellow colleagues as part of a team and assist them as needed in all operation and event activities

Essential Requirements:
● Experience working in the museum sector, historic property or tourism industry
● A third-level qualification in an appropriate field, such as History and the arts, or related
subjects, such as archaeology, architecture, art history, museum studies, archives, libraries.
● The ability to work as part of a team and independently
● The ability and skills to undertake independent research
● A keen interest in history particularly Irish history from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century; social history; or the history of art, architecture and design.
●Willingness and ability to learn and gain new skills
● The position requires flexibility covering weekend work and events
● Competency in handling artworks and historical objects
